How to recover permanently deleted files

Objective of Post

Many a times we erroneously or intentionally delete the files and empty the recycle bin so that it can't be accessed. Later after sometime we need the file again and are left in condition where we have no idea how to get it back. There are various softwares which help us in recovering our permanently deleted files. Recovery of files depends upon various factors like how long back the files were deleted, whether disk has been formatted after deletion etc. etc. Don/t worry if you have formatted the disk, even it can be traced. So beware of ....................
File recovery tools may be divided broadly into three Categories
  1. File Recovery :- Data Keeper, Disk Keeper, Easy Recovery, Recover my Files, Get Data Back, Power Quest, Data Life saver, File salvage (Mac OS), Tuneup utilities, Nortan Utilities, Final data enterprise, Test Disc, Photo rec, Recuva, dvDisaster (Optical disk), CDroller  (Optical disk) , Isobuster  (Optical disk) etc.
  2. Forensics :- EnCase, Forensic Toolkit, The Coroner's tool kit, The sleuth Kit. Some of them requires hardware dongles like EnCase to recover files.
  3. Imaging tools :- Copy CatX, ddescue etc. take images of the corrupted hard disks.
Here I will be giving you an example of one data recovery software "Final data enterprise" which i find useful for normal players of Computers.

  • You may download a demo version from the link given below. Its not free and for full version you will have to pay.
  • Install and open it.
  • Caution :- Don't install on the drive from where you have to recover the files. Installing on the same drive will render the data unrecoverable.
  • Click on File>Open. A window will popup.
  • Click on the Drive you want to recover data
  • Click ok (Click on 'Find Format' if you want to find format details)
  • Below shown window will appear

  • Click 'OK'
  • Remember data recovery is a time taking process and it depends upon the size of disk being scanned for recovery. 8 GB pen drive takes 30 minutes appx to get scanned so you can imagine for a disk of 80 GB. Anyway if you have to recover the files time has to be spent.
  • After finishing cluster range search you will find the result as shown in below picture.

  • Check the extreme left column. Click on 'Deleted files' You will find the deleted files with all details like 'Name', 'Status', 'Size', 'Date of modification' etc etc.
  • Right click on the file you want to recover.
  • Click on 'Recover'.

  • Select the destination you want to recover and click on "Save"

  • You are done.
