How to convert .kml file into .gdb file

Objective of this Post

  • Waypoints and routes/tracks created on Google earth can only be saved in .kmz or .kml file from Google earth application. Now if you wish to upload the same waypoints/routes/tracks to your Garmin GPS you will require to convert the .kml file of Google earth into .gdb file as most Garmin GPS doesnot read .kmz/.kml file.

  • Install the GPS Babel on your PC and Open it

  • In Input part select "File", in Format select "Google Earth (Keyhole) Markup language.
  • Click on File Names.
  • A window will pop up. Select the .kml file which has to be coverted in  .gdb file. Now check that which are the things you want to be incorporated in the converted .gdb file (e.g. Waypoints, Routes, Tracks).
  • Leave the filters as it is.
  • Now again in Output part select "File", in Format select "Garmin Mapsource-gdb".
  • Click on File Names.
  • Select a location where you want the new converted .gdb file to be stored and give it a file name so that you can remember it.
  • Click on Apply. You should see a message "Translation successful"
  • You are done.
